Navaratri shopping nooks to check out

By Our Staff Reporter

The Arcot Road neighbourhood doesn’t go abuzz at Navaratri time. Not like Mylapore does! But in nooks and corners, there is a quiet buzz.

Anbazhagan’s pavement shop on Ponnambalam Salai, near Aiyappan Temple is a regular feature, every year at Navarathri time. Local people do shop here – the oonjal is a new piece here and has attracted shoppers.

There are dolls to suit any budget. Small and big dolls, sets dolls, ceramic and wooden toys . . .

A popular shopping spot, Rahmath Handicrafts,  near Vadapalani Temple has toys featuring Yashoda and Lord Krishna on ‘vennai’ churning scene. Gomatha doll is a new arrival, says Ansari. The marriage set catches the eye and has seen good sales this year, he says.

Hastha Silpa Art Gallery at 5, Palanianadavar Koil Street, Vadapalani, is also a nice place for quality crafted toys and artefacts. These wooden toys from Karnataka are specials here.
