Lakshmi Magalir Mandram hosts lively Womens Day meet

Report and photos by V. Soundararani

Lakshmi Magalir Mandram of Valasarawakkam organised a get together on Women’s Day, March 8, at Alwarthirunagsr’s Thiru Vi K Park.

Senior members of this group took the opportunity to highlight their struggle to get back their mandram building on Gandhi Road, which was occupied by the Municipality office as a transit facility.
The Municipality is moving shortly to its own new building. The women said that there are now attempts to rename their building as renamed Valasarawakkam Community Hall.
Many other Mandram women talked about women’s rights and freedom.
Prizes were distributed to the winners in cookery and other competitions held earlier.
Girls from St John’s School, Alwarthirunagar presented a few cultural programmes that made the event a lively one.

The news item about LaksmiMagalir Mandram, reminds me of the so many events my wife and me have participated conducted by this mandram at the hall which was usurped by the local authorities who are supposed to be of beneficial to the community. Though they never did anything to the community at large other than collecting money, even little organised by these old ladies were disrupted. It is almost several years that we had any such place and organisation in Valasaravakkam to meet and enjot cultural events. Only ALMIGHTY can save us from such willful vandalism.
