Appams and paniyarams at Virugambakkam food joint

By Anuradha Rajagopal

The busy Kaliamman Koil Street in Virugambakkam has all kinds of shops and nooks, choc-a-bloc. And every now and then some new ones open and some get a new look.

But many nooks here are of utility value.

Recently, we stopped at Sri Kothai Bhavan – High Class Vegetarian Restaurant having heard that this place serves some simple, traditional food.

Muthu Maari is the owner of this place which was opened 3 months ago.

Says Muthu, “Nowhere in the immediate neighborhood can you get appam and paniyaram.  We can offer you these any time at Kothai’s.”

We tasted the sweet paniyaram and they was delicious.  The vegetarian restaurant offers both sweet and kaara paniyaram. 4 pieces cost Rs.20.

It also offers plain appams. A set costs Rs.20.

And these specials are what draws foodies now. The prices also seem reasonable.

Shankar, the cashier says that the vegetarian food here is popular and the place gets packed at lunch and ‘tiffin’ time.

Besides this food, Kothai offers fresh fruit juices.

Kothai is also into the catering business.   Krishna Kumar says they can take orders to suit to any occasions – home meetings, birthdays and weddings.

We provide traditional food and people seem to prefer that, he adds.

Kothai Bhavan is at 59/105, Kaliamman Koil Street, Virugambakkam, Chennai-92 . Ph: 2479 0097.

Catering contractor Krishna Kumar can be reached at 9444911097
