Interview with Virugambakkam MLA, B. Parthasarathy

Parthasarathy B is the newly elected MLA of the Virugambakkam constituency. This constituency now includes, divisions 65, 128, 129, 130, 131 (Virugambakkam, Saligramam, K K Nagar, MGR Nagar, Nesapakkam)

Parthasarathy is a long time associate of DMDK leader, Vijaykant, and now is one of his closest party aides. He won the election from the area where the party leader and the party operates. Parthasarathy feels proud about it.

Arcot Road Times’ contributor V. Soundararani caught up with him for a  telephone chat.

What did you do soon after you got elected?

People have elected me with expectations to serve them – to be provided all the basic amenities. My party leadership is fully supportive of my endeavours and stands by my side always in the efforts of fulfilling them. I started it off by some humanitarian gestures. I gave aid of Rs 1000 each for 120 less privileged school students to meet the costs of notebooks, and uniforms. I gave financial relief to a distressed family whose hut was gutted in a fire at election time. These expenses were all met with the personal borrowings towards my future 2 1/2 months’ salaries of Rs 50,000 per month as MLA.

I arranged to provide a borewell with a pump  for continuous water supply at the water starved Government Peripheral Hospital in ESIC Complex, K K Nagar. This was a dire need as there was absolutely no water facilities inside (No Metro Water supply because of the pending bill payments). Patients were running around for want of water.

You have also had meetins with the people to listen to grievances. What has taken place?

Four meetings were held with members of Virugambakkam Residents’ Welfare Association, United Residents Associations of Vadapalani and Saligramam, and in Velayudham Nagar and Kaveri Rangan Nagar associations. These apart, we visited the wards – 128, 129 and have collected grievance applications meeting people face to face. I spend all my time visiting several areas of the constituency.

Major issues reported for your attention so far . .

Widening of Kaliamman Koil Street, Virugambakkam Canal issues, sewer backflows, bad road conditions, power cable problems and garbage disposal.

How do you plan to tackle these issues?

Garbage clearance mechanism has been strengthened, and am getting positive feedback from residents. I am also planning to get funds for underground cabling in Divn 130, 131.

Work on a mini STP ( sewage treatment plant) has started in Gandhi Nagar (approved some time ago) to give temporary relief for the sewage block issue in Virugambakkam areas. There are already macro level plans to augment Koyambedu STP’s capacity with increased bio gas power generation (green initiative).

Your understanding of the long standing grievances and issues in your constituency

I am very familiar with the civic issues and people’s grievances, as I have travelled widely here. Land patta issues and old age pension are the urgent issues to be addressed. I have already talked about all of these issues in the Assembly sessions and am looking forward to the budget session to highlight these.

The projects that are you are planning with the MLA’s funds?

Community halls and other basic facilities for quality life for people to be decided on priority basis (what people ask for). We have chalked out plans to visit every ward on specific pre-announced dates to collect grievance letters.

How accessible are you?.

We have a temporary office at 18, Arunacahalam Road, Saligramam, ( Corporation Ward Office -  Dvn 129). Residents can meet us here and submit petitions. A permanent office would come up in ward 65, Virugambakkam.
