Photos of kolus by Arcot Road families
Just as the Navaratri fest rolled out and families began to set up their kolus, we chose to drop by at a few houses and shot some kolus which were fascinating to visitors and guests.
E. Vatsala ( seen in photo on left) and her family, including the Aruns in Saligramam have a splendid kolu with at least two rows of hand made dolls that they have treasured for ages.
The hand made dolls depict the Shakunthala story. They have been made from cotton, mask and cloth and they have hand stitched nearly 50 dolls)

At Uma Somasundaram’s house in Virugambakkam, the unique theme was -Thirukayilayam with the Himalayas as the bakdrop which was created by painting on the wall at home.
This family is at 14, 5th Street, AVM Colony, Virugambakkam
The duo of Lakshmi Mukilan & Samvrutha Bhavani in Ashok Nagar had a theme based on the Kallalagar and even created a river in front of the traditional golu. They also created a Thiruvannamalai miniature alongside. ( photo on left).
This family lives at M2-D, Anugraha Colony, 3rd Avenue, Ashok Nagar.
Many families entered their kolus for local kolu contests and hoped to win prizes.
Radhika Muralidharan of Krishna Nagar 3rd Street, Virugambakkam had a giant model of the Kathipara junction flyovers, roads and traffic beside the core kolu. She said she spent days doing this and was very excited with the model (photo on left)
Sujatha Narayanan from the Swarna Kamal Apts on Arcot Road, in Saligramam truly spent hours on her golu and shot an album of pictures to share with friends. (photo on left)
She said her concept of the main kolu was on Vishnu Puranam, with focus on 6 amsas.She had also made
models of Kutralam Forest, Tirupathi and Central Railway Station and spread them out, with soft lighting in the background to lend a soft touch to the creation.

Gods made of clay. We ensure our Kolu follow the tradition with hand drawn kolams and decorating the kuthu velakku.
Uma Jayashankar says the
theme for her Kolu this year is ‘Sacrifices’. “We have selected characters from our idhihasa, puranas and sangam period that were known for their sacrifices / selflessness and displayed them using our imagination. To mention a few we have Sibi, Pari, Began, Adhiyaman , Manunidhi Chozan and more in our Kolu this year.”
Uma had also displayed scenes from Ramayana and Krishna avatara and a park. All the displayed items as part of the theme were handmade by Uma, her daughter and husband.
