A women’s group of Alwarthirunagar hosts cul-fest with aplomb

bomalShantha Raman and 80 members of the Sree Lakshmi Womens Association have been making a small impact in Alwarthirunagar.

Now, they are getting some zing into this neighbourhood.
The team is happy it has successfully run a music and folk art fest in its midst.

This is the second edition and the buzz that the first created was so good that Nellaippan Chettiar, owner of the Chettinad Mahal hall here provided the space free of cost for the recent fest that ended on the eve of Pongal.

Kutcheris, kol-attam, bommalattam and discourses were packed into the daily schedule. Says committee member Rama Ramalingam, “We are really happy that we pulled off a good show.”

wo audiAdds treasurer Anandhi Sundaram, “We tapped and got many local sponsors and we thank them for trusting us.”

The Association which celebrated its 41st anniversary recently decided to promote a fest since there was a need for classical music shows for rasikas who now don’t want to travel to Mambalam for the December season concerts.

The group holds annadhanam every month in honour of Periyaval, donates saris to 100 poor women and gifts a gold thali to one poor bride of the area.

Says Rama, “All this is done with our own donations.”
But the group wants younger women to help and get involved. “We know these women are busy at work but the baton has to be passed on,” adds Rama.

The new secretary is Meenakshi Ayyappan.

Call Anandhi Sundaram at 23771945 and Meenalshi at 24863989.
