Vadapalani-based dance troupe tour Taiwan

danceeeBharatanatyam guru Sheela Unnikrishnan and a compact group of her dancers are flying back after a 18 day tour of Taiwan.

And going by the notes that the guru and the girls have been bene sharing on FaceBook this Vadapalani-based group seems to be having a rocking time in the East.

The tour has been a mix of yoga and dance demonstrations, dance recitals, community interactions and a cultural mela down the inner streets of Taiwan.

On Nov. 2, the Sri Devi Nrityalaya group joined other artistes in a cultural parade and performance in the Indian Festival organised by Dream Community of Taipei

Between the hectic events, the group also took time off to celebrate Deepavali at the invitation of the Mayur Indian Restaurant, Taipei.

Sheela says it was a different experience playing a key role in workshops in three different dance schools in Taipei,

Helping her on this front were her sister, Shobha Korambil, also a classical dancer and Suvasani Kannan

The group also held Lec-Dems at Fo Guang (Buddha) University, Yilan County and at True Yoga, Taichung, Taiwan besides other spots.

On Nov. 11, they will be at their finale performance – with Bharatanatyam by Sheela Unnikrishnan and Kuchipudi by Shobha Korambil and Bhairavi Venkatesan

Sheela says she choreographed a small presentation, inspired by Ang Lee’s (a Taiwanian) latest hit Hollywood movie, Life of Pi.

Shravanthi Sainath, Sheela’s disciple who acted as Anandhi, the Indian dancer in the movie is also an artiste on the Taiwan tour and she performed the female lead role in Sheela’s  Taiwan production, “Life of Prince”.

She says ‘Life of Prince’ was a hit with the Taiwan guests as they could easily relate this production with the movie Other dancers on tour are Subiksha Raghuram, Shravanthi Sainath, Simran Sivakumar and Bhairavi Venkatesan.

Subiksha and Simran reside in the Arcot Road area and all the artistes are Sheela’s prime disciples at Sridevi Nrithyalaya, K. K. Nagar.
