Mithram, a community body for Malayalis celebrates first year

AnniversaryAnother community group of the neighbourhood Kerlalites has begin to bloom. Mithram Arts & Cultural Centre based in Virugambakkam recently celebrated its first anniversary with a colourful event at the M G Swamy Kalyana Mantap and its team is pleased the body has grown roots.

Essentially born out of troubles, legal challenges and staleness at Maithri, which was once the large, lively community hub of Keralites in this part of the city, Mithram is now carving its own space.

Says vice-president Suresh Nair, “There was a need to provide a platform for our members to practice and showcase their talents and we formed this body to do just that.”

In addition to encouraging its members who can sing, dance and act on stage to rehearse hard and take part in cultural shows and contests, especially in events where the Keralites come together, Mithram has a few other goals.

One is to be the meeting place for Keralite families who live in the Arcot Road area. Another is to hold small community events, like the Republic Day celebration. Three, to undertake social projects they can afford to fund.

One recent outreach activity was to entertain seniors and children at the Stree Seva Mandir campus in Saligramam. The guests were offered a meal and bedsheets.

Recently, Mithra has begun to support a small music orchestra, of about 8 talents. The team had a bhajans recital at the Hari Hara Temple of the Chinmaya Mission in Chnmaya Nagar. Its members hope to present stage shows in the near future.

Nair says that though Mithram is a place for Keralites of this area, it is also open to families from places like Porur, Koyembedu and Kodambakkam.

K G Krishnakumar is the president, Suresh Nair and Sudessh Kumar are vice-presidents and Sunil Kumar is secretary.

Its office is at 11A, Sayee Nagar, Kaliamman Koil Street, Virugambakkam. Conatct Suresh Nair at 98421 20390.
