Campaigners remove nails, ad boards from trees

By V. Soundararani

Kasi Raman, a volunteer of Nizhal, a NGO which promotes tress and planting of trees coordinated a ‘Free the Tree Campaign’ in late June in Ashok Nagar.

The members met at a point near Blue Water Tank on 11th Avenue, and removed the large number of advertising boards that were found nailed to the tree trunks and branches.

The group consisted of a few new members, who are IT executives. They showed tremendous interest and determination in what is a difficult task.

People who reside near these trees helped the group by providing tall stools, that made the job easy.

Siva, Shyam and Srini did a meticulous job. They removed ad boards that were high up on the branches of trees.

Senthil, a regular volunteer was insistent that the last nail from every tree was pulled out.

More than a dozen trees were ‘freed’ from the boards and nails.

Members said they saw termites and ants behind the flexi banners on the tree trunks that were slowly damaging the trees.

Kasi said that in some cases the trees were stripped of the bark in the name of worship, and screwed in were some weird objects.

To join Nizhal’s activities in the Arcot Road area of the city, call 9381284722, 9840868441.

The group holds walks and talks and undertakes campaigns to remove ad boards nailed to trees to save them from destruction.

Corporation should ban nailing&hanging of adv boards in trees.
Police should also take initiative in safeguarding trees
