Citizens Guardians, a NGO group based in Ashok Nagar that looks at local issues met recently to critique the performance of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board from the consumers point of view and make suggestions.
The meeting was attended by 125 socially conscious members from Ashok Nagar, K.K.Nagar, M.G.R.Nagar, West Mambalam, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Virugambakkam and from other areas of Chennai.
Among the participants were Sadanand, urban planner and social activist, Swamidorai, advocate, P Suresh, consultant on petroleum products and research, Shoba Srikant, social activist, Padmanabhan, secretary of Federation of Kodambakkam, Ashok Nagar residents welfare Association.
The speakers dealt at length the hardships experienced by the residents due to frequent power failure, low/high voltage, severe power fluctuations and the callous attitude of the TNEB authorities to register the complaints of power failures.
Ravichnadran spoke at length on the action taken so far by the NGO like meetings held with various authorities like TNEB Chairman, Member Distribution, Chief Engineer and Chief Public Relations Officer of TNEB.
He said that all complaints from consumers are not at all registered purposely (excepting a few) to show as if there was no complaints. By suppressing the factual position the TNEB, misrepresented in their report to TNERC (from October 2008 to March 2009) that they have achieved 99.86% in complaint redressal mechanism and 100% in low voltage complaints.
Though the position has temporarily improved in 12 areas of Chennai after 7/6/2010 power outages still occur and many other areas are languishing with local problems.
