One of the two corridors of the proposed Chennai Metro Rail will run from Fort to St Thomas Mount, for a length of of 23.4 kms.

Enroute, this corridor will traverse parts of the Arcot Road neighbourhood and three stations have been planned in this region. The project will commence late 2008.

The lines will run on elevated structures along Jawaharlal Nehru Road (or Inner ring Road) from Koyambedu.

The stations that have been proposed in the first plans are

-1. Vadapalani, at the junction of Arcot Road and 100 ft Road, with station on the Ashok Nagar side.

2. Ashok Nagar – somewhere near the Ist Avenue – IV avenue junction 100 metres away from Ashok pillar.

3. K K Nagar – between K K Nagar Telephone Exchange and Adyar River

The stations would be at a distance of 1.1 to 1.2 km.

The metro rail coaches will be air-conditioned, and will have only one class.

The systems will be user friendly, particularly for senior citizens with escalators and travelators like conveyor belts, comparable to world class features, say the officials.

Compensation for the acquired land will be provided at the market rates and will not harm any individual’s interests, be it business or living, officials have assured residents a meeting this past week. Similar meetings are being held in all areas which the plan covers.
