Fines slapped on people who dumped garbage outside bins

By V. Soundararani

Five people were recently fined by the Virugambakkam conservancy staff for throwing garbage in public space.  Two households on Sayee Nagar 2nd Main Road were also penalised for dumping garden waste on the road. Each of them paid a fine of Rs.300.

This follows the recent move of Chennai Corporation to fine those who dump garbage outside bins and those who urinate in public.

Though local Chennai Corporation officials have been warning local residents some people have not taken heed. A couple of vegetable cart vendors who offloaded lots of vegetable waste on Kaliamman Koil Street were pulled up and fined.

At the SAF Games Village in Koyambedu, a resident threw a bag full of garbage outside the bin kept opposite the Chennai Corporation Commissioner’s house and had to pay a fine.

Officials say they are serious about fining offenders.
