Tamil Nadu state budget – Metro Rail figures in it

By Our Staff Reporter
A tender for the viaduct from Koyambadu to Ashok Nagar, on an elevated corridor on 100 Ft Road has been finalised for a part of the Chennai Metro Rail project. The foundation stone will be laid by the Chief Minister in the first week of April.
The line will pass through Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar and K K Nagar alongside the 100 Ft Road and will have three rail stations in this neighbourhood.
Work on this 4.5 km long, Koyambedu to Ashok Nagar stretch will kickstart the project. Soma Enterprises, that handles the port corridor project in the city, has bagged the contract at Rs. 194 crore, beating the quotes of L&T and Maytas. The elevated corridor from Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue on 100 ft Road is likely to be completed by 2012 end.
Roughly, Rs. 600 crore has been earmarked in the TN state budget for this project. Total estimated cost of the project is Rs 14600 crore. The major part of the funds will come from a Japan’s funding agency.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited sources said that the exact alignment of the Metro Rail line itself has not been finalised (it is being done by another agency) and the notices for land acquisition will be served only after that work is over.
Unofficially it is learnt that some people in Jafferkhanpet have been given notices of land accquisition.
ARCOT ROAD TIMES will report on this project every now and then since it is of vital importance to this area.
