Vaikasi Visakam celebration

Vaikasi visakam was a colourful and lengthy celebration for Lord Muruga at Sri Murugan Temple in Vadapalani on June 5.

Visakam star in the month of Vaikasi, is one of the six birth days for Lord Murugan, who has six abodes spread over Tamil Nadu. (the ‘arupadai veedu’).
This birthday in particular gains significance in the sense, Brahmotsavam is held on this day for the God.

After ten days of the preparations and rituals, on Visakam star, the god takes a holy dip at the temple tank (theerthavari), goes around the temple in a ther, after which elaborate rituals and poojas are carried out.

At 12 noon, during Uch kala pooja, abhishegam is performed with holy water from 44 kalasams, taken in a procession on the inner praharams. “These kalasams have been kept in pooja for 10 days, within which it attains more power or Saannithyam”, says Nagaraja Gurukkal, a senior priest here.
