PSBB cricket team falters in final of TNCA tourney

Reported by S. Sasidhar

The under-14 cricket team of PSBB, K K Nagar was second time unlucky. It was roundly defeated by the strong San Thome school team today in the final of the prestigious TNCA tourney for city schools.

As the lads led by captain Ashwath Mukunthan lined up for the short prize giving ceremony at the cricket ground of RKM Vivekananda College in Mylapore, many looked crestfallen, some giggled and others had a half smile.

They all knew that the loss was of their making. They did not even try hard. As Ashwath said later, “We had aimed to make about 170 runs but when wickets began to fall we felt we could make at least 120. Had we done that we could have had a score to fight back into the game. It didn’t happen.”

It didn’t because PSBB kept losing wickets from the start of play at 9 a.m. They came into this game after losing a final in the recent Vidya Mandir tourney, against San Thome. They should have dug in. They did not.

Three run outs really did them in. In no time, they were bowled out for a mere 73 runs. San Thome’s tight fielding also contributed to a limited score.

San Thome lost a wicket when it batted but their two in-form batsmen carried the day and the finale was over at about one o’clock.

The PSBB team has done well this season, strong in its batting and bowling but it has not come out strong at the crucial time.

Their coaches Venkataramanan and Kumaraswamy have been beside them.

Their pride though has been pinned on having the smart spinner V. Sai Prakash being selected for the National Academy camp this season after representing the TN under-14 team.
