Photos of Kolus in Arcot Road houses

ARCOT ROAD TIMES features here photos of kolus you have created for Navaratri. These photos were taken and sent by readers.

You too are welcome to email one great photo of your kolu. Add a caption to it.

The 1st photo here on this page is of the kolu made by dancer / dance teacher Veena Ramakrishnan of Vadapalani.

Usha Ravi of K K Nagar’s 4th Sector has has the theme for her kolu as – Navarathriyum Nam Kalacharamum was her theme.(2nd photo)

She also included symbols of religious places to show Religious Brotherhood.

Usha says she has used the marappachi dolls and kalasam too in her creation.

In our 3rd photo, Lalitha Raghuraman has set up this traditional kolu with nine steps.
The motor driven water fountain and fish tank are the centre of attraction.

By the side of it is the sprawling park that her kid son Ganesh Kumar is crazy about. Raghuraman helped her set up the motor systems. The award winning huge cup he got the previous day as the best Area Sales Manager in Dr Reddy’s Labs, decorates the centre of the steps.

Lalitha is the daughter in law of Carnatic vocalist Bhavani Santhanam. The family lives in Saligramam’s Arunachalam Street, near Shobha Kalyana Mandapam.

Photo No.4 is of Kala Prabhakaran’s kolu. The  theme for kolu this year is Amman.

Kala is a very active woman during Navrathri. She goes around with her local group for mass singing of Navavarna krithis and recitation of Lalitha Sahasranamam at various places every day.

Kala took time to depict the Amman on a kuthuvilakku. The madisar clad Amman is adorned with apt jewellery and this brilliant idol occupies the centre space of the kolu. The Mangadu Amman and the temple’s golden Ratham procession scene has also been set up, along with a nine step neatly displayed kolu.
Kala is a resident of 114 – A, Sangeetha Colony, Anna Main Road, K K Nagar.

Photo No.5 is of the kolu created by Srilatha’s family of her husband, daughters and parents in law.

They are ardent Sai devotees. Pooja season engage the family members most parts of the day and Srilata said that she took lots of time to do the kolu.  Hill temples dominate the set up. A giant robot is a centre of attraction for kids.
Srilatha Balaji is a resident of Venkatesa Nagar, Virugambakkam.

Photo No.6 shows the kolu at Uma and Sundar’s house. The couple are avid travellers, visiting Shivasthalams and religious places in India. Their kolu is a grand display of the deity idols brought from all these places.
Sundar says he conceptualises the kolu and lights them up. So he did a great deal of work to set it, says Uma.

The couple are residents of 4-B, 45th Street, 8th Sector, K K Nagar.

Uma Jayashankar of Ashok Nagar says she sticks to tradition. So her rather large kolu followed the age old concepts. Photo No.7 is Uma’s kolu at her residence.

Photo No.8 belo is the kolu of Vasanthy Suresh of MGR Street, Kaveri Rangan Nagar, Saligramam.

As you can make out from the photo, Vasanthy may not have set up a none steps lolu like Uma did but she stuck to the Nvaratri tradition.

Photo No. 9 below shows a different type of kolu.

Sujjatha Narayan who lives in Jains Swarnakamal Apts on Arcot Road, Virugambakkam focusses on the Vedic Cosmic Theory and set up the kolu on this theme
