Stella Matutina College of Education celebrates 50 years

You may have lived for years in K K Nagar or Ashok Nagar and yet would not have known Stella Matutina College of Education which is in the heart of the neighbourhood.

There may a reason to it. The college, under the management of the Franciscan Sisters of the Presentation of Mary prefers to keep a low profile.

This week though, there was a reason to celebrate.

The college launched its golden jubilee and it preferred to have a quiet, serious function.

On October 14, the launch was in keeping with the Catholic tradition – celebrating a High Mass with the Auxilary Bishop of Madras-Mylapore, Dr. Rev. Lawrence Pius as the main celebrant.

Joining him were the senior suns of the community here and of the congregation. Among them, Sister Helen Vincent, a senior nun who is also an alumni of this college and has held many top posts.

Later, there was a formal function. The former Vice Chancellor of Annamalai University was  the chief guest.

This college for training teachers was established in July 1961.

The main aim of this Teacher Training College is to promote excellence in the sphere of teacher education. The college undertakes to prepare teaching personnel who are intelligent, social minded, spiritually vigorous, vocationally prepared and committed to the cause of quality education.

Bearing these aims in mind, the college offers programmes for the all round development of the personality of the teacher.

There are undergrad and post graduate as well as doctoral programmes.

The college is autonomous and accredited with the 5 star status at the national level. Dr. Sr. Philomina Pushpamary is now the Principal.

The alumni have contributed significantly to the growth in the stature of SMCE and for making known its reputation as a college providing quality teacher education.

The college has been holding frequent alumni get-togethers. There were repeated requests from the alumni based in other cities for such get-togethers. Hence, instead of confining it only to Chennai based alumni, others too are welcome to join in.

Dr. Mrs. Alma Selvaraj is the Coordinator of the SMCE Alumni Association Please feel free to send your suggestions and comments to Dr. Sr. Marsiana (srmarciana@chn.ernet.in) or Dr. Mrs. Alma Juliet Pamela
