Onam celebrations: ‘Maitri’ hosts one on Sept.11

The neighbourhoods of Virugambakkam, Valasarawakkam and K K Nagar are home to many Keralites.

This month, as they celebrate the 10-day fest of Onam, the colours and sounds of God’s Own Country will be seen and heard in this neighbourhood.

One place which tries to be a second home for the community is the Maitri centre, which has its auditorium and office in Chinmaya Nagar Stage 2 Annexe, Virugambakkam.

The community will celebrate Onam at home on Sept 8, though, by now some families must have taken the train to their home state, where the Malabar region is still enjoying the monsoon rain.

On Sunday morning ( 10am – ish), Sept.11, Maitri will open its doors to the women and creative men who wish to take part in the pookalam contest. This is indeed a tough one – you choose flowers from your basket and go on to create a design of your choice.

A grand traditional lunch, the sadya will be served to all members – a vegetarian spread.

A few hours later, start the string of cultural programmes. Maitri secretary S. Venugopal says that the Maitri group won the second prize at the annual CTMA ( Confederation of Tamilnadu Malayalis ) recently, with 70 members, juniors and seniors rocking the stage and the audience.

Venugopal says for Onam they will choose a few of the popular items and the song, dance and comedy shows should provide entertainment to the members and their guests.

Clearly, Maitri is set to celebrate Onam in grand style.
