‘Madras Week’ events; Talk, PhotoWalk, Tree Trail, school campus buzz

The annual Madras Day celebrations have just rolled out. And since the events have grown over the years, the umbrella Madras Week tag has become appropriate.

All events are ideated and hosted by a variety of city-based communities, groups of individuals and done so voluntarily in keeping with the spirit of this unique celebration. What started as one day-long celebration now presents close to 100 events.

Featured below are events which are taking place in the Arcot Road area neighbourhood.

On August 21, 7.30 pm., Namma Arcot Road presents ‘The Nawabs of Arcot’, a talk by S. Anwar, who is a researcher, photographer and film maker.

The venue is Namma Veedu Vasanta Bhavan, 100 Ft Road, Vadapalani and the event is open to all.

Tea will be served at 7 pm.

The Nawabs of Arcot who came to represent the Mughals in this part of the region, were a major factor in the shaping of the political history of southern India in the 18th century.

Their rise and fall coincided with the declining fortunes of the Mughals, as well as the rise of the colonial powers. Caught between the need to uphold an oriental way of governance or Rajdharma and at the same time, fight for their own survival with an increasingly assertive and greedy (East India) Company, it was an uneven battle.

This talk by Anwar will look at this crucial period  in Indian history, and also focus on the significant social and cultural contribution made by the Nawabs of Arcot to the city of Madras/Chennai and the region.

Namma Arcot Road is a small group of local area residents whose aim is to host events like talks, heritage walks, exhibitions and the like that focus on the local area. They seek more like-minded people to join hands as volunteers and people who can sponsor tea and snacks for future events.
