Poll campaigns hot up in South Chennai, Sriperumbudur zones

The spirit of the General Elections is slowly setting in in the Arcot Road neighbourhood.

Last weekend, the electioneering fever went up since the first day of filing nomination papers was on Saturday and there was a fair about of buzz in the area.

We came across only one hub of activity this past week. A complex located on Kaliamman Koil Road in Virugamabkkam had got a proper shed cum office space created and all around it were banners, flexis and boards.

This was the hub of the local AIADMK unit.

By evening time, the illuminations came alive, vans began to arrive and we met up with a few local leaders of the party and the cadres, ready to do the rounds.

The AIADMK’s candidate here for the Chennai South constituency is Dr Jeyavardhan; he is the son of the former Speaker and AIADMK strongman, D Jayakumar who has now been lying low.

A post-grad medicine student, Jeyavardhan’s name was out of the blue but he has been doing the campaign rounds diligently. The party’s campaign has been first off the block. It has a big office located on  Kaliammam Koil Street, Virugambakkam.

The DMK’s man for Chennai South is the Chennai North MP, T K S Elangovan. a man who is often seen on TV channels and in the newspapers, since he is also a vocal spokesman for the DMK party. Elangovan has done door to door rounds in Saidapet and moved out.

DMK leader M Karunanidhi hed a public meeting in Chintadripet where the DMK candidates for all three city zones were on stage.

The BJP recently named senior leader L. Ganesan as its man for this zone. He is an old hand in the city but the campaign is yet to pick up.

Lok Satta has named a young professional – Jai Ganesh. AAP is also due to name it man for the contest.

The constituency is wide and far flung – from Adyar and Mylapore to Sholinganallur in one end and T Nagar and Virugambakkam at the other. So issues that need a MPs attention are also diverse though related to the metro.

From problems that the IT Corridor on Rajiv Gandhi Salai face to civic and infrastructure issues in T Nagar and Arcot Road.

The Valasarawakkam neighbourhood falls under the Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha constituency. Here, in 2009 there was a tough contest between DMK’s T. R. Baalu and A K Moorthy of PMK and the former won. Now DMK has named former union minister Jagatratchagan as its man here. The AIADMK has named K N Ramachandran.

In the alliance cobbled by the BJP which has many parties sin it, the MDMK led by Vaiko has named Masilamani for the contest to this seat.

It appears that civic infrastructure and transport are the biggest issues that a MP of this place has to address for people in this part of the constituency.
