Independence Day celebrations 2014

BALALOK SCHOOL (4)The Independence Day events held in this neighbourhood were a pot-pourri and mélange which reflected the mood and attitude of the communities which chose to celebrate the milestone.

From local schools to walkers at Sivan Park, from nagar groups to auto stands each hosted its own event.

This report and the photos here and on page 5 give you a just a part of the celebrations. Some photos were BASHKAR COLONY (7)contributed by readers, the rest were shot by photographer V. Rajesh.


Palaniappa Nagar Residents Welfare Association (PANRWA) in Valasarawakkam celebrated at the entrance gate of its children’s playground. The chief guest was Mangalam Sundaram,  a senior citizen who is aged 101. She hoisted the national flag.

S. A. Subramanian, vice-president and S. Ganapathy president, secretary P. Saravanan and T. Purushothaman, treasurer were present.  Ward 149 members and officials of this civic zone were also present.


Kaveri Rangan Nagar Narpani Manram celebrated at Childrens Park, Saligramam. T. Lakshminarayanan, retired asst.secretary, L.I.C graced the occasion and hoisted the national flag. A. C. Varman, secretary and L. Balasubramanian, vice president besides other office-bearers and the community took part . Sweets were distributed to children.


Lions Club of Chennai Valasarawakkam celeberated the event at Adi Dravida Welfare High School, Virugambakkam. President P Asokan hoisted the national flag. Lions Ramesh, Sriram, Srinivasan, Sujathaa Srinivasan, Rajakulari and Chitra Ramesh participated along wth the Headmistress, teachers and students of the school. Cultural shows were performed by the students.


Independence day celebrations at the house of guru Annapoorni Ramasubramanian who teaches slokas to children and adults had a distinct style and solemnity to the occasion. Children in the age group 4 to 12 came dressed in colors of the Indian flag.

Freedom fighter Kunchitapatham hoisted the national flag at 15th Sector ,K K Nagar Celebrations were also held at Interact Schoolat the Chennai High School, Jafferkhanpet.

That evening, Rotary Club of Chennai K K Nagar installed the Rotaract Club of Scions at Namma Veedu Vasantha Bhavan in 100 feet Road, says Rotarian V. Balambal who took part in all these events.


Annapoorni Ramasubramanain has been teaching slokas for the past 20 years in K K Nagar. Annapoorni says she understands the need of every child for material education, education for becoming good human beings and for divine education so that they can face the realities of life. Many well wishers say she is a ‘second mother’ to every child that learns here.Her students perform at weddings, upanayanams, temples, festivals, and any invited event across the city.
