Madras Week events locally

As  the Madras Week celebrations roll out for the August 17 to 24 period, there are only a few low key events in the Arcot Road area.

Padma Seshadri Bal Bhavan School in K K Nagar has been conducting programmes over a week in connection with Madras Week and is restricted to its students.

But one event on August 27, 10.30 am is open to the public and should be really interesting. The theme of this show is – Evolution of Tamil cinema: Down Memory Lane – an exhibition.

A community group has an event slated for August 24, 10.30 am at Gayatri Enclave, K K Nagar. Madras: As we see it Today – is a collage contest organised by Namma Arcot Road.  Each team will comprise a child in the 6-10-year age group, and a parent. The contest open to the first 20 teams that register. There is no participation fee. Participants must bring their own materials. Call or SMS 9940410271 to register.

Arcot Road Times has initiated a Local Area Social History Project for this occasion but it appears that the launch will take time. Meanwhile, the local newspaper is keen to accept copies of photos taken of this area in the 1970s and 80s. Photos may be of temple and church fests, school events, community meets and of the local nagar too.

So far 14 ‘old’  pictures have been collected – of Vadapalani temple zone, some local film studios and the first blocks of a few old local schools. Publisher Vincent D’ Souza says if people who possess some old pictures call the office ( call 23764320) these can be recopied at the spot.

Copies of old posters and land records are also welcome. The group plans to hold an exhibition of this collection and some short talks too.
